Design Principles & Elements

Design Elements – C FLOPS and the 4 T’s

“An essential or characteristic part of something.”

  • Colour
  • Form (of objects)
  • Line
  • Opacity (measure of light that passes through an object)
  • Point (think dot, could be end of a line)
  • Shape (2 dimensional object confined by lines (depends on your viewpoint im assuming))
  • Texture (depth and touch, think sandpaper – coarse, rough, smooth, soft)
  • Tone (lightness or darkness of colour)
  • Translucency (allowing some light to pass through object)
  • Transparency (allowing all light to pass through object)

  • Contrast (the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association.)
  • Asymetry
  • Pattern
  • Surface Qualities (think finish)
  • Balance (a situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.)
  • Repetition (reusing the same or similar elements)
  • Rhythm (repetition – with or without modification)
  • Proportion (Scale, size of one thing against each other)
